How Tankless Water Heaters Work
Tankless water heaters, as you might have guessed, don’t use storage tanks to heat water. Instead, they use heat exchangers similar to what boilers use. When there is a demand for hot water, the tankless water heater starts up and water begins to flow through the heat exchanger. The water is typically either heated using a natural gas burner assembly or an electric heating coil.
When the demand for hot water subsides, the tankless water heater shuts off until it’s used again. There is a short delay between when the water heater turns on and when hot water comes out of the faucet, as it has to heat all water from scratch. The delay is not significant, though, and the overall output is similar to a tank water heater.
Why You Should Install a Tankless Water Heater
There are two main reasons why you might want to install a tankless water heater: space and energy efficiency. Tank water heaters are limited in the number of places that they can be installed, due to the large tanks that are required for their operation. Tankless water heaters are much easier to install, as there are many more places that they can be used. You should still trust a professional to handle your installation, though.
One of the biggest issues with tank water heaters is how much energy they waste keeping water heated when it isn’t being used. Tankless water heaters save quite a bit of energy by only heating water when it is needed, allowing you to cut down on operating costs without sacrificing your hot water output.
